The production of this EP only took around a week. I’ll admit that this project was more of a practice or exercise rather than a real sorta thing to take serious. Though, I am not trying to cover this project in a veil of unseriousness in any attempt of dissuading criticisms. I just feel like I MUST put it out there that I regard this project differently than I do others. But whatever, I dubbed this project "CLOUT GOGGLES" in homage to the self-aggrandizing interwebs-centric Hip-Hop movement on soundcloud.com circa 2015 (those guys wore clout goggles). Among the iconography of the Soundcloud Rap movement, (e.g., purple liquid drug concoction homogenized with cough syrup and lemon/lime soda, colorful dreadlocks drooping over the face like that of a willow tree, and so many of those outrageous hoodies adorned with camouflage and zip up to resemble a shark), the CLOUT GOGGLES have made the greatest impression on me. To be frank, I thought they were cool. I still think they are cool. And I have made TWO attempts to “bring them back” to which I have failed. I never brought them back. But they are STILL COOL.
Anyhow, I had one goal in mind regarding this project. I wanted to sample my favorite hip-hop tracks that I recognized as belonging to the “soundcloud era” (using these samples is actually TECHNICALLY not allowed within the rules of the music distribution service I use [distrokid]. I ASSUME that since I am like so tiny that I’ll just fly under the radar and no one will give a shit) and I wanted to make them sound like what I think hip-hop sounds like now. I think when I was trying to think of the “sound” that I was going for I sorta thought of it as “underground” rap, but I understand the “underground hip-hop" can refer to a lot of stuffs and all that. I think most people will call this kind of sound “jerk.” So, there it is. CLOUT GOGGLES is a compilation of soundcloud hip-hop circa 2017 jerk remixes.
